Karen West - "Malfunction"

After some time experimenting with making noise, and experimental music on the flute I've acquired a need to make music that is calming -homogenous-. To bring together random pieces of music to create a whole. Cool Edit Pro is a good medium for this task.

My prior attempts were with turntables, mixing records. Unfortunately it seems I don't have the patience to learn how. I would get frustrated too quickly and want to throw the records out the window.

Malfunction is a compilation of two pieces. Deep in the Jungle by Aphrodite recordings and Space 1999 by Power records. The intent of this radio are piece was to create a homogenous audio art piece from these two records and to learn how to use Cool Edit Pro. The Aphrodite track provided the bass line and background music, functioning as the backdrop to the dialogue from the Space 1999 sample.

I altered the Space 1999 recording through altering the tempo and adding filters. The Deep in the Jungle sample remained unaltered. I used the multitrack option to mix the two tracks together. The multitrack function allowed me to easily align the two recordings. At the end of the mix, a A880 tone was generated.

The name Malfunction was given to the piece when the computer ate my first piece. I'm positive that it is completely unrelated to the fact that I didn't save the piece. The situation led me to think of all of the times that computers Malfunction and cause unnecessary grief in peoples lives. Also, it worked in my favour that it was analogous to the narrated sample in my radio art piece. At the end of the narration, as the voice becomes increasingly distorted, the narrator says "at least the computer can still fuuuu...nnn..cccc..ti....iiiioooonnnnnnnnnn......." and then the flat tone is heard alluding to mishap.
