The world of Bagpiping has remained relatively unchanged over the last few hundred years. With the introduction of Shuttle Pipes into the Bagpiping family, there was finally an instrument that could be played indoors with accompaniment. The shuttle pipes performed on in the piece, were made by John Walsh in Antigonish Nova Scotia.
The pipes are in the key of "A" and can be played with comparative ease with other instruments. In my piece entitled Shuttle Pipe Back Brewing there is the: Shuttle Pipes, acoustic guitar and a Palestinian hand drum. The idea for this piece, is the fusion of low technology instruments with high end computer editing technology. In their respective traditions, these instruments are played as they built. One does not, or can not, alter their sound unless they are in a studio setting.
The music itself is composed of the first four bars of a traditional piece of music called Korgi. The original pipe track was "clean, " having no distortion or use of effects. I then added the other instruments, dubbing them in one at a time, on different tracks. Each track was then digitally manipulated using various effects and equalization. With a final mix-down the piece was complete.
